Dag Hammarskjöld
Dag Hammarskjöld (1905–61), who was the son of a former prime minister of Sweden, Hjalmar Hammarskjöld, early entered Swedish government service. He later began working for the Swedish delegation of the United Nations, and in 1953 he was elected Secretary General. During his tenure Hammarskjöld greatly extended the influence of the United Nations as well as the prestige of the secretary-general. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously in 1961, the same year as he was killed in an air crasch.
